UNIGIS Abschlussarbeiten


Der krönende Abschluss eines UNIGIS MSc Studiums ist sicherlich die Master Thesis. Mit ihr belegen unsere MSc-AbsolventInnen, dass sie den akademischen Grad "Master of Science (Geographical Information Science & Systems)" zu Recht führen.  Im UNIGIS professional Studiengang muss keine Abschlussarbeit verfasst werden. Dennoch nehmen einige Studierende die Möglichkeit war, ein Geoinformatikprojekt durchzuführen und entsprechend zu dokumentieren.

Verfahrensoptimierung der Elodea-Bestandsaufnahme durch Hydroakustik am Beispiel des Kemnader Stausees

During the summer months, the Ruhr reservoirs are increasingly overgrown by the aquatic plant Elodea nuttallii. The plant cover is so strong that it heavily affects the use of the lakes. This gives rise to major problems for the lake users. Popular regatta events for example must be cancelled. Besides, the plant clogs the screens of the water-power plants, which has a negative impact on the ecological electricity production. In order to obtain data regarding the spread of the plant, the dimensions of Elodea have been monitored in the autumn of each year by means of aerial photographs and the data have been entered into a GIS. At that time, the plant had already expanded to the surface of the water, so that it was clearly visible from the air. By then however, it was too late for a warning. So as to inform the users of the lakes as early as possible in the year about the degree of growth of Elodea, this master thesis will deal with the process optimisation of the capture of the current population of Elodea by means of hydroacoustics using the example of the Kemnader reservoir and will verify whether the monitoring of Elodea in the Kemnader reservoir using hydroacoustics early in the course of the year is possible and advisable. In order to capture basic data for the research, in spring and summer 2013 the plant lengths of the macrophytes in the lake were measured using sonar recordings. In this master thesis, it will be shown that it is possible to distinguish certain plant types in the sonar profile and to filter them from the captured data. In order to generate comprehensive statements from these single pieces of information, different Kriging interpolation methods will be tested. Both the ordinary Kriging method and the universal Kriging method achieve good results and are suited for comprehensive statements regarding the population of Elodea. In order to obtain additional statements about the existing Elodea population, volume models will be generated using the free demo version Surfer 12. The results and analyses of the hydroacoustics show that this procedure leads to useful results and the forecasting is significantly improved in comparison to the previously applied method. For the first time, it was possible to gain comprehensive information about the Kemnader reservoir, relating to the length and the dispersal behaviour of the macrophytes in spring. Thus it will be possible in the future to inform the users of the lakes about the upcoming spread of Elodea in the late summer in such a way that they can prepare themselves.
