UNIGIS Abschlussarbeiten


Der krönende Abschluss eines UNIGIS MSc Studiums ist sicherlich die Master Thesis. Mit ihr belegen unsere MSc-AbsolventInnen, dass sie den akademischen Grad "Master of Science (Geographical Information Science & Systems)" zu Recht führen.  Im UNIGIS professional Studiengang muss keine Abschlussarbeit verfasst werden. Dennoch nehmen einige Studierende die Möglichkeit war, ein Geoinformatikprojekt durchzuführen und entsprechend zu dokumentieren.

Visibility analysis based on viewsheds is one of the most frequent tasks in GIS. In this Master Thesis viewsheds were used to determine the visibility of potential photovoltaic systems with special attention to heritage concerns. Digital surface models provide the option to perform solar potential analysis but they can also be used to examine the areas that are visible from rooftops, suitable for photovoltaic systems. The combination of these viewsheds with classified heritage regions can provide information about which and how many listed areas are visible from a selected rooftop. This information might help to decide if a building permission for a solar collector is approved or not. A python script was developed which analyzes the viewable area from a selected object. Afterwards a spatial intersect function is applied on both datasets, the viewshed and the classified heritage map. The result of this operation is a classified viewshed. The tool has been successfully applied to two areas of interest in the city of Potsdam. The script works well with ESRI software ArcGIS, a widely used and popular GIS program. The python tool was designed in a way so that it can be used for similar tasks in other citys and communities, too. The results of this Master Thesis are provided to the employees of the Potsdam Heritage Office. They offer a useful tool for pre-analyzing the situation in the field so that cost intensive on-site examinations can be reduced.
